Enough

Today has been one of those days.

When call, almost seems like it’s not enough.

When your gender makes or breaks
your ministry
When the way you wear your hair
the length of your skirt
and the color of your toenails
somehow
means you are or aren’t
called by God
equipped by God
sent forth by God.

Today has been one of those days.

When call, almost seems like it’s not enough.

When what Jesus said
about the gentile, the Samaritan, the eunuch, and the leper
were unicorn kisses and cotton ball bathes.
Nothing political
nothing justice
nothing social
to see here.
All you do is talk (not preach, by the way) about race
all you do is talk (not preach, by the way) about equality
all you do is talk (not preach, by the way) about justice
Well.

Today has been one of those days.

When call, almost seems like it’s not enough.

When the words you have
in your head and in your heart
seem inadequate
to quell the heartbreak of death
the uncertainty of tomorrow
the fear of human violence
the cries of ‘not enough’
not enough food or money or sanctuary.
Like what you say
could even for a second
be a balm.

Today has been one of those days.

When call, thank God, is just enough.
